Five AC Noises That Could Mean Trouble

noisy acHave you ever noticed how noisy things become as they age? Think about it; cars start to squeal when belts and brakes wear down, homes start to creak as they settle, and even people tend to emit some very peculiar noises as they age (or eat too much dairy!). Your air conditioner, on the other hand, should not change too drastically over the years, especially if you have purchased an AC maintenance plan and kept up with scheduled cleanings and/or tune-ups. If your AC unit sounds a bit ‘off’ lately, however, it could be trying to tell you something. In fact, there are five AC noises that could mean trouble for your unit and/or your wallet.

  1. Clicking

If your AC unit makes a clicking noise as it’s trying to kick on, there’s a good chance that you have an electrical issue. In most cases, it is caused by a faulty relay, broken fan motor or a malfunctioning thermostat. Do not attempt to repair this on your own; let a professional diagnosis the issue and correct it for you.

  1. Rattling

In general, rattling noises indicated that your AC system may be having fan issues, a blower out of alignment or even a motor loose in the compression can. There may even be debris inside the unit causing the noise. In any case, do not ignore it. Call an HVAC repair company and have your air conditioner inspected before the issue becomes a bigger problem.

  1. Hissing/Bubbling

Hissing and bubbling typically happens when refrigerant is trying to escape from your AC system. It can be caused by a damaged line, holes in the capillary tube or even a rusted filter dryer. If you hear this noise, contact a local AC repair company ASAP! The leak is not only dangerous to you and your family, but also the environment.

  1. Banging/Clanking

This type of sound is never good, whether it’s coming from your car or an AC unit. The culprit responsible for the banging and clanking sounds generally turns out to be a loose part, such as a connection rod or piston pin, or unbalanced blower. And, just like your car, the longer you let this type of noise linger, the more damage it will cause. Save your ears, and your wallet, by calling a reliable AC company and have them take a look at it as soon as possible.

  1. Screaming

A loud piercing scream from your AC system is the equivalent to an alarm sounding or someone yelling for help. It means that pressure has built up to dangerous levels and the system should be shut off. Once you’ve powered it down, grab a phone and call a trusted air conditioning repair service to schedule an appointment immediately.

No Ac system will last forever, but many of these issues may be avoided or the repair costs reduced by simply investing in an annual AC maintenance plan. If you live in North Florida, contact Cool Connections at 904-908-5252 to learn more about our affordable plans or to schedule a repair.
